Australian Citizenship

Australian citizenship is an important step in your migration journey.Citizenship may be conferred upon permanent residents of Australia who have resided in Australia for the required period of time, and meet all other criteria.

There might be other ways to become an Australian citizen for those

  • who are permanent residents and are over 60 years of age
  • who were born overseas to a parent who is or was an Australian citizen

Privileges of Australian citizenship:

Those who have been conferred citizenship have the same rights and privileges as any other Australian citizen, including:

  • Voting in federal and state or territory elections, and in a referendum
  • Applying for work in the Australian Public Service or in the Australian Defence Force
  • Seeking election to parliament
  • Applying for an Australian passport and re-enter Australia freely
  • Receiving help from an Australian official while overseas
  • Registering children born overseas as Australian citizens by descent.

Responsibilities of Australian citizens:

Citizens by conferral are also subject to the same responsibilities as other Australian citizens, including:

  • Obeying the law
  • Defending Australia should the need arise
  • Serving on a jury if called to do so
  • Voting in federal and state or territory elections, and in a referendum
