What is Graduate Temporary Visa (Subclass 485)?

The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) is a working visa for international students who have completed two years of study in Australia. It can be valid between 18 months and 4 years depending on the visa stream and the subject you studied.

There are two different streams; Graduate Workstream and Post-study Workstream.

What can I do with this visa?

With this visa, you are eligible to live, work and study in Australia for the duration of your visa validity. Your immediate family members are also allowed to join you in Australia.

Am I eligible?

To qualify for this visa, you must:

  • Be under 50 years of age at the time of lodgement.
  • Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
  • Be living in Australia at the time of application. COVID-19 Concessions
  • Provide evidence of adequate health insurance.
  • Provide evidence that you have applied for an AFP check.
  • Provide evidence of competent English.
  • Have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list.
  • Have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the skilled occupation list (for Graduate Work stream applicants only).

 Graduate Work Stream

This visa is for international students who have graduated with skills and qualifications that are on the skilled occupation list. To be granted this visa, you must have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation.

You will meet the Australian study requirement for this visa stream if you are awarded at least one degree, diploma or trade qualification and:

  • Your course was a CRICOS-registered course.
  • You meet course requirements.
  • Your study was in English.
  • You completed your course after a minimum of two academic years of study.
  • You completed your course in Australia in no less than 16 calendar months.
  • You held an Australian study visa that allowed you to study.

When applying for this stream of subclass 485, the course or courses must have resulted in a degree, diploma or trade qualification. In some circumstances, you may combine courses to meet the 2 academic year components of the Australian study requirement.

The Graduate Work Stream 485 visa is valid for 18 months from the date of grant.

Post-Study Work Stream

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution.

You may be eligible for this visa if you are awarded at least one degree, diploma or trade qualification and:


Duration of the Post-Study Work stream depends on which qualification and the place you completed your studies. If you study in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane your 485 visa duration will be:

  • 2 years: completion of Bachelor Degree, Bachelor with Honors, Masters by Coursework or Masters (Extended)
  • 3 years: Masters by Research
  • 4 years: Doctorate


You may be granted 1 or 2 extra years of this visa if you graduated from a campus located in a regional area and continued to live in a regional area while holding your first Temporary Graduate 485 visa.

Student visa holders impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions will be able to count online study towards the Australian Study Requirement.
