Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 (Permanent)

This visa allows the holder to stay in Australia permanently with full work rights and the applicant is not required to be sponsored by a state/territory government or relatives in Australia.

What is the Skilled Independent Visa 189 (Permanent)?

This visa allows the holder to stay in Australia permanently with full work rights and the applicant is not required to be sponsored by a state/territory government or relatives in Australia. It is particularly appropriate for those with university degrees or trade qualifications.

What can I do with this visa?

  • Work and study anywhere in Australia.
  • Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residency.
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen.

This visa has two streams; a point-tested stream and a New Zealand stream.

1. Points-tested streams

To be eligible to apply for the 189 visa, you will need to obtain a minimum score of 65 points.

What is the process?

  • Make sure your occupation is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
  • Obtain a minimum score of 65 points.
  • Obtain positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.
  • Submit an expression of interest in SkillSelect.
  • Wait for an invitation to apply for this visa.
  • Gather your documents.
  • Apply within 60 days of the invitation.

Am I eligible?

To qualify for a subclass 189 visa, you must:

  • Have an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list.
  • Have a suitable skills assessment in an occupation on the occupations list for Skilled Independent visas.
  • Obtain a score of 65 points.
  • Be aged between 18 and 44 inclusive.
  • Have competent English.
  • Meet the health and character requirements.
  • Lodge an EOI and be invited to apply.

How are the points calculated?

As mentioned above, a minimum score of 65 points is required. The higher your score is, the sooner your Expression of Interest (EOI) will be picked up.

2. New Zealand stream

This visa stream will allow eligible New Zealand citizens who have shown commitment and contribution to Australia to become Australian permanent residents.

Am I eligible?

To qualify for this visa, you must:

  • Hold a New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa.
  • Have usually resided in Australia for at least the last 5 years.
  • Have started living in Australia on or before 19 February 2016.
  • In most cases, have a taxable income at or above a specific income threshold for each of the required income years before lodging your application.
