What is the TSS (Temporary Skill Shortage) 482 Visa?

From 18 March 2018, the 457 was replaced with the visa subclass 482. This visa is comprised of a short-term stream, medium-term stream and labour agreement stream.

Visa subclass 482 allows Australian employers to hire foreign skilled workers. TSS visa holders can work in Australia in their nominated occupation and may have a pathway to permanent residency.

What is the visa application process?

Step 1: The employer’s sponsorship application must be approved. If the employer has already received the approval for any previous nominees, they do not have to do it again. The sponsorship approval is valid for up to 5 years.

What can I do with this visa?

  • Visit or stay in Australia to complete workplace-based training to improve your skills for your current occupation, field of tertiary study or expertise, or a professional development training program in Australia for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. (Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years).
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want.
  • If eligible, you can apply for a permanent residency visa.
  • Immediate family members included in the application are also entitled to live and work on this visa type.

Am I eligible?


  • At least 2 years relevant work experience.
  • Nominated to work in an occupation on STSOL or MLTSSL.
  • You may need to complete a relevant skill assessment if required. In most cases of the Short-term Stream, the skills assessment is not required or can be waived.
  • You must meet the English language requirements, found at https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/temporary-skill-shortage-482/sufficient-english.
  • You must meet the health and character requirements.
  • Your pay reaches the minimum market salary threshold (currently $53,900 plus superannuation).
  • Conduct labour market testing LMT.
  • Have a full-time employment contract.
  • You can be in or outside Australia when you lodge your application.

 Short-term stream

  • Nominated in an occupation on the list of short-term skilled occupations.
  • Renewable once onshore (2+2 max in total onshore) + more offshore.
  • IELTS overall 5 (no skill below 4.5) or equivalent, unless exempt.
  • No permanent residency pathway unless regional.
  • Two years of relevant work experience.
  • No age limit.
  • Meet health and character requirements.
  • Sponsor tests the Australian Labour Market.
  • Employer must pay the Australian Market Salary Rate.

Medium-term stream

  • Nominated in an occupation on the medium and long-term strategic skill list.
  • Renewable an unlimited amount of times.
  • IELTS overall 5 (no skill below 5) or equivalent, unless exempt.
  • Pathway to permanent residency.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience required.
  • No age limit.
  • Meet health and character requirements.
  • Sponsor tests the Australian Labour Market.
  • Employer must pay the Australian Market Salary Rate.

Labour agreement stream

  • You are nominated to work in a specified occupation under the terms of a Labour Agreement.
  • Can be renewed.
  • English requirements specified in the Labour agreement between the employer and the Commonwealth.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience required.
  • No age limit.
  • You must meet health and character requirements.
