What is the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482)?
The SID visa (Subclass 482) allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers from overseas to fill positions when qualified local workers are not available.
It replaced the TSS 482 visa and introduced:
- Three new visa streams
- Reduced work experience requirements
- More flexible employment conditions
- Clearer pathways to permanent residency
Streams of the SID Visa
1- Specialist Skills Stream
For highly skilled workers in specialist occupations, usually with advanced expertise or in-demand technical roles.
2- Core Skills Stream
For skilled workers in occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) — which includes hundreds of roles across industries, updated regularly to match workforce needs.
3- Labour Agreement Stream
This stream allows skilled workers nominated by an employer with a Labour Agreement to reside and work in Australia. A Labour Agreement is a formal contract negotiated between an employer and the Australian Government, represented by the Department of Home Affairs.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the SID visa, applicants must:
- Be nominated by an approved Australian employer.
- Have at least 1 year of relevant work experience.
- Complete a skills assessment if required for the occupation.
- Meet English language requirements (varies by stream).
- Satisfy health and character requirements.
- Receive at least the Australian Market Salary Rate (AMSR) and meet the minimum income threshold.
Application Process
- Sponsorship Application – Employer must apply and be approved as a sponsor.
- Nomination Application – Employer nominates the skilled worker for a specific occupation.
- Visa Application – The nominated worker lodges their visa application.
Pathway to Permanent Residency
The SID visa offers clearer and more flexible routes to permanent residency, especially through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186). Depending on your stream and work history, you may transition to permanent residency after meeting the eligibility criteria.
